Used as shrink proof finishing of textiles, waterproofing agent, sodium chlorite bleach and activator, buffering of water-proofing agent CR, curing agent for resins and plastics, rubber vulcanization accelerator (accelerator H). HMTA is also used in the production of bactericide and explosives. As the mandelic acid salt, it is used for the treatment of mild urinary tract infection. It decomposes at an acidic pH to form formaldehyde and ammonia, and the formaldehyde is bactericidal; the mandelic acid adds to this effect. For external use, it treats tinea, antiperspirant, treatment of axillary osmidrosis etc. It can also serves as phosgene absorption agent of the gas mask when mixed with sodium hydrate and phenol. Besides, as a common corrosion inhibitor, HMTA is used to decreases the corrosion rate of metal materials.
